Welcome to

American River Charter School (ARCS) is a charter school in the Black Oak Mine Unified School District (BOMUSD) consisting of three diverse programs:

  • Our Site-based Program is located in Georgetown and our focus is on creating independent thinkers in a positive cooperative school community using hands-on curriculum in multi-age classes. We provide students in grades TK-8 an educational option with a focus on experiential, project- based instruction, an arts-infused curriculum a low student-adult ratio. Our goal is for our students to become life long learners;
  • Our TK-12 Independent Study Program provides homeschooling families a variety of educational options including a supervising teacher for guidance and parent-chosen educational resources, including vendor classes, field trips, and instructional supplies.
  • Our Hybrid Independent Study Program is a program where students can attend small, teacher-led classes two mornings a week with 10-12 other students for group activities and instructional support.  Barbara Richey, one of our independent study supervising teachers (ST), is facilitating these classes.  Please call the school if you are interested in your child participating.

All three programs use the California State Standards to guide instruction. We have a parent club called Friends of ARCS to help facilitate parental involvement. They support our social and fundraising events as well as help support our "wish list" in the areas of technology, music and the arts.

We continually accept applications throughout the year:  Independent Study students can enroll at anytime; site program students and hybrid students can also enroll mid-year, however if the class is full they are added to a wait list and then selected in a lottery process.

For more information about these programs, please visit  pages.

If you are interested in visiting our school, enrolling, or adding your child to our waiting list, please contact our office at 530.333.8340 for more details, or you can email us at arcs@bomusd.org
